  • My thoughts on Season 8 of Project Runway

    1. Casting was bad. There were some very interesting designers, and some very uninteresting designers. Likewise, there were some very talented designers, and then there were some so-so designers. But, as far as talent goes, I'd have to say compared to previous seasons, these designers were much less talented. There were some nice shapes and prints used, but I felt like complexity of construction was really lacking. Simple designs are nice, but if that's all I see over and over again, it just gets boring. I would have liked to have seen a designer with the construction skills of Rami, Jillian or Christian just to add something interesting to the designs.

    2. Gretchen shouldn't have one. Completely disregarding her repugnant personality, her designs are just not good. They're very unflattering, and despite what Nina Garcia and Michael Kors say, I really don't think her aesthetic is where fashion is heading! I expect to see a lot more Mondo-inspired trends popping up soon, and not so many Gretchen trends.

    3. Disregarding the fact that I really like Mondo so my opinion is biased, I really think he should have won. All of his designs were exciting, and you can tell when a garment has a Mondo-look. He really has a knack for prints and shapes that make for fun designs.

    4. I was disappointed how Andy went with his collection. The one piece I liked was the top that had weaving at the bottom. Other than that he really dulled it down compared to some of the other things he made during the show.

    5. I love Tim Gunn and that pastel striped tie he wore at some point on nearly every episode.

I hope the next season's designers are more talented, and that the show focuses less on the silly drama that goes on between the designers.

  • I never thought I'd have car problems again, until...

Yesterday when I was at work, one of my coworkers got a call. When he hung up, he said, "Lucas, go outside. Some people are fucking with your car." I thought at first that they were playing a joke on me, so I wasn't expecting anything more than a prank. But when I went outside, there were 4 or 5 teenagers standing around my car wiping it off with rags.

I asked them what happened as I was approaching the car, and they explained that they were a christian youth group on a mission project painting someone's fence with a sprayer, and they didn't realize there was a parking lot behind the fence, so my car ended up getting sprayed.

I was completely horrified, distraught, and speechless when I saw how much paint there was on my brand new car! There were brown specs all over the hood, front bumper and windshield, as well as parts of the side of the car. And it had been baking there in the heat for who knows how long, because they didn't bother to try to find out who the car belonged to.

I didn't know what to do about it, so I called my insurance agency and the dealership, and neither of them were very helpful, so I called a body shop. The body shop told me to make sure to get it out of the heat and to try running it through a car wash. The car was did absolutely nothing; it still looked like someone had had explosive diarrhea all over it. So when I went back to talk to the guy in charge of the youth group, he said he had some sort of solvent that would take the paint off. I asked him if it would also take the car's paint off, to which he responded, "I don't think so." How confident he sounded with his solution! I definitely didn't want them causing any more damage to the car.

Anyway, I went to the body shop as fast as possible, and they had some solvents that were able to remove the paint without removing the car's paint. The problem was it would take a very long time to remove since it had been baked on. They estimated it would take half a day and a couple hundred dollars (which my insurance wouldn't even cover), so they recommended I do it on my own and they told me what chemicals to use and to make sure to get my car in a cool place. They were very helpful. So I brought my car down to my dad's shop and parked it in his garage so it could cool off, and one of his workers ended up having just the chemical we needed, so my sister, one of her coworkers and I spent about 3 hours scrubbing the paint off. It's barely noticeable now, except unfortunately there are some scratches. Putting scratches in it was unavoidable, because we had to apply some pressure to remove the paint, and there wasn't any material with small enough fibers that could remove the paint without making some scratches. Once it's buffed off though, it should look nearly as good as knew, except for the parts we couldn't really get to, like the grill.

I'm always so cautious about where I park my car, but I guess no matter where it's parked, something's bound to damage it!

So, do I send the youth group coordinator a bill for the time I missed at work having to deal with the problem and the cost to get the paint buffed? All in all this will cost me about $200, and I don't exactly have much extra money to be spending nowadays.

  • Extreme Facebook Stalking: Homo Edition

I haven't told anyone I work with that I'm gay, firstly because I don't really feel the need to, and secondly because I don't want to make them uncomfortable. I figured sooner or later they'd figure it out anyway and by that time it wouldn't make them too uncomfortable because they'd know me well enough by then to know that I wouldn't be hitting on them or whatever else it is that makes heterosexual guys scared of gay guys.

I figured in the case that any of them tried to look me up on Facebook, I'd be fine because my profile is set to private. But somehow, I guess one of the guys at work was suspicious enough about me that he did some pretty intense Facebook stalking. I'm not really sure how he went about it, but he somehow found Michael, which is odd because Michael's profile is also private. He did some type of search involving a mutual friend he either had with me or Michael, according to some other guy I work with.

I usually refer to Michael as my roommate when I'm talking about him at work, so today at lunch one of the guys that I work with mentioned that he saw my roommate on Facebook. I guess that was his way of telling me he knew I was gay. It's kind of funny how people try not to use the word "gay" when they're telling you they know you're gay, like when my mom called me to tell me she knew I was gay and didn't use the word once. He also told me that he'd known ever since he met me because I seemed "delicate"... I'm not exactly sure what he meant by that. He also told me that the guy who Facebook stalked me was really surprised to find out, which is odd because why would he have gone to all that trouble to find out information on me and then be that surprised?

Anyway, I guess it was over a week ago that they discovered this, and all of them seem fine with it. By tomorrow, I'm sure they'll all know I'm aware that they know I'm gay because word of mouth is always so fast. I'm anticipating a little bit of awkwardness, because the coworker who told me about the other coworker Facebook stalking me will probably have told him that he told me about it. On the plus side, I no longer have to come up with excuses to not go to stripclubs with them.

  • Raise

So, today is the one month anniversary of starting my new job. This meant my wage was supposed to go up by $2.50 an hour, which would be an extra $400 a month. This was the agreement when I was hired. The lead programmer has told me twice that I'm doing great and he's definitely going to tell the boss to give me the raise. Well, today I reminded my boss that I was supposed to be getting a raise, but he changed his mind. He said it had nothing to do with my performance and that I'd been doing really well, but in his words, "there's something on our end we need to get straightened out and it'll probably be another pay period before I can get a raise." Uhm, what's that supposed to mean?

This isn't the first time that something fishy has gone on there payment-wise. They asked me to work overtime a few weeks ago, and then they tried to put my additional hours onto the next pay period instead so I wouldn't get paid for overtime. I'm pretty sure that's illegal. At least in Kansas it would be, but I work in Missouri, so I don't know what their overtime laws are. I'm guessing they're similar to Kansas's though.

Anyway, I'm looking for another job now. Apparently accepting the first position I was offered wasn't such a good plan.

  • Phobias

My two biggest phobias are public speaking and bees/wasps. So, when my brother texted me last Friday to tell me that there was a wasp nest in our bedroom, this was a little unsettling to say the least. He shut our bedroom door and went to stay at his place in Lawrence (thanks for all the help, Josh!), so my dad ended up helping by spraying the nests with insect killer.

The fumes in my room were really strong, so I had to sleep in my sister's room for a few days. This turned out to be a good thing, because today when my dad and I were removing the nests and the window air conditioner through which the wasps had gotten into the room, we discovered a fourth nest with live wasps.

This was the biggest nest. It had about 12 wasps in it. It couldn't be seen because usually there's a curtain over it, so we never saw the wasps coming in or going out.

Just a few days earlier, I had been looking around this area of the room trying to figure out what the source of a strange noise I'd been hearing was. I thought there was a squirrel or bird nest in the air conditioner. I'm glad I didn't get stung! It's surprising I didn't, because I moved the curtain around when checking the air conditioner.
